We’ve been busy building houses all over New Zealand and 2020 served up a year of contrasting fortunes with COVID-19 providing uncertainty and inconvenience and the demand for housing providing spectacular growth in the building market. With many New Zealanders choosing to build new, we’ve decided to share with you the 5 most popular house plans for 2020.
Even though many dream of grand designs, it seems that days of the “Mini Mansion” are well behind us with families choosing homes that are well designed but also economical in size to fit smaller sections, an emerging trend in these days of high land prices and more subdivision of existing properties.
So without further ado, here is the top house plan of 2020...
In the top spot, it's the 159 sqm, 3 bedroom Whakamaru. This stunning looking single storey home, clad in natural timber and Linea board, has been a favourite since we released the plan in late 2019. We are particularly proud that this plan can also be built to a 6 Homestar rating as is proven by our Waikato showhome.
Our second most popular plan was new this year and has been proudly built as our New Plymouth showhome. At a generously sized 229 sqm, Ngāmotu is the largest of our top 5 plans and has plenty of family room with 4 bedrooms, separate lounge and a ton of storage space including a well proportioned walk-in wardrobe.
Taking out the bronze this year is a spectacular family home, the Waitomo. At 197sqm there is plenty of room for the growing family, and with home comforts such as a fireplace, separate living/media room and double garage it's no surprise that even for a larger home it made our top five house plans of 2020.
Our 4th most popular plan is the 185sqm Wingatui. A real entertainer with a large open plan kitchen living area as well as a scullery in the kitchen to keep everything tidily tucked away. Great street appeal with its double mono-pitch roofline, double garage, 2 bathrooms and 3 large bedrooms. A lot of living for a great price.
And finally, sitting at number 5, holding popular appeal year-after-year, the 99.9 sqm Hauraki. A classic smaller, mono-pitch design that hides an amazing amount of space inside. Modern lines without looking “boxy”. There are 3 bedrooms, a separate lounge, open plan kitchen and living area. Home or bach, this plan seems to hit all the right notes. This home can be viewed at our Taranaki showhome in Inglewood.
So there we have it, the top most popular house plans of 2020. Who knows what 2021 will hold, perhaps the stunning new two-storey Aoraki house plan may make the next list? Either way, we are happy to be busy building homes for New Zealanders throughout the country and we look forward to discussing your plans for a new home in the near future.
