How To Approach Decorating a New Home?

A newly built property offers an exciting opportunity to bring your creativity to the forefront with a blank canvas. Our biggest tip is to decorate your interior spaces in a way that reflects your own personality and uniqueness instead of subscribing to the latest trends. Whether you’re into minimalism or bold, bright colours in your house decor, you do you!

COLOURS, SPACE AND PATTERNS

Getting it right from the start is important. The colours you surround yourself with can affect your mood and the overall perception of space. Lighter colours create a sense of space, while darker ones can create a cosier atmosphere. Creating contrast throughout the home also makes a big impact. For example, a dark blue patterned tile for your kitchen splashback in a room that’s mostly light will really catch the eye.

At Latitude Homes, our colour consultants will work with you right from the onset to coordinate every aspect of your new home, from joinery and bricks, to tiles and wall colours; we will make sure that not only everything works together, but it is what you want for your new home. We will assist you with combining textures, shapes and finishes. This gives a great starting point for you to add your furniture and soft furnishings that will complete the look you are after and make the space your own.

Lastly, express yourself through artwork on the walls, unique pieces and have fun with it.

SHAPE AND TEXTURES

Your choice of furniture plays a significant role in your overall interior design aesthetic. Rounded sofas and tub chairs in a bright solid colour, for example, can make a big statement. Velvet is a great fabric to add luxury to a sofa, but velvet isn't always the best option when you have young children. A more affordable option for your home decor is to add cushions with bold designs, patterns or prints to your existing couches.

LIGHTING

The lighting in your home is often an underestimated element. In particular, the colour temperature of light you select for your home. This can completely transform the mood and ambience of a room. The warmer tones the light has, the more orange/yellow it appears. Brighter lights feel colder and have a bluish tone. Using lamps and lighting with dimmers is a great way to add flexibility to your home ambiance.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Window treatments are another fabulous way to add colour. They can  create mood and add interesting features to your home while serving a functional purpose. Countless options range from modern dual roller blinds for a contemporary look to wooden venetian blinds or you could include thermal block-out blinds for a warm, classic feel. Incorporating a stylish voile and curtain combination can create a softer elegant feel or bring some bright coloured textural curtains into your home for that defined space.

GREENERY

Indoor plants are a great way to bring nature into your home and create a relaxing, tranquil atmosphere. Depending on your preferences, you can opt for a single feature plant in a room or turn your house into an indoor jungle! Popular, impacting choices include Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa), Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata), Rubber Plant (Ficus Elastica) and Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia Reginae).
